Men who have performance issues in the bedroom could soon find the cost of packing a better erection has become a lot cheaper. The price of an erectile dysfunction treatment that’s capable of lasting up eight times longer than Viagra has been cut by over 50% and may soon be available via the NHS.

Cialis was previously only available via prescription to a limited number of men, but the patent has now expired, allowing manufactures the opportunity to provide cheaper versions.

Cilais on NHSThe active ingredient in Cialis is a drug called tadalafil that relaxes the walls of the blood vessels and increases blood flow to certain areas of the body. Men who were eligible for a Cialis prescription used to have to pay a whopping £7.22 per tablet.

The cost is now set to come down to £2 to £4 per tablet and generic versions of Cialis will soon be available via most popular pharmacies, including Boots and Lloyds.

Tadalafil medications like Cialis work in a similar manner to Viagra, but the really big difference is the amount of time the benefits last. Viagra boosts blood flow to the penis for a period of four to six hours. Often called “the weekend pill”, tadalafil can get men pumped up and ready to go for up to 36 hours per tablet.

ViagraHowever, although it’s a longer-lasting medication than the sildenefil used in Viagra, the benefits of tadalafil only come into play during periods of sexual excitation. So users of the drug don’t need to worry about spending their weekends trying to hide away or disguise a prolonged erection every time they head for the shops or visit a bar.

Tadalafil is also a lot faster acting than sildenafil. Once you pop a pill it only takes about 30 minutes to get you good to go. Sildenafil has to be taken at least an hour before sex. That may be great if your an avid scrabble player, but most men are likely to prefer to forgo the 60 minutes of frustration and use a faster-acting option instead.

When it comes to getting to work fast, tadalafil has another ace in the hole. Sildenafil drugs like Viagra work best when they are taken on an empty stomach. Taking them after a meal can further slow the effect, but tadalafil works equally well whether the stomach is empty or full.

A spokesperson from the Independent Pharmacy, which plans on stocking the generic version soon, said: “As tadalafil lasts for up to 36 hours, it allows men to have more natural, spontaneous sex lives.”

When purchased privately, a packet containing four 10mg Cialis tablets has a retail price of £28.88 (£7.22 per tablet). The Independent Pharmacy will soon be selling the same size generic pack for £14.99. That brings the price per tablet down to £3.74. Boots, Superdrug, and Lloyds Pharmacy have confirmed they plan to stock generic versions of tadalafil as well, but thus far they have not revealed how much their customers will be expected to pay.

Although it’s set to become easier for impotency sufferers to buy cheap tadalafil in the UK, access to the generic versions will still require a doctor’s prescription—even when buying online. However, getting a prescription may not be an easy thing to do.

The branded version (Cialis) is presently only available via the NHS for erectile dysfunction sufferers who also suffer from certain other medical conditions including Parkinson’s Disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer. According to the NHS website, men may also be allowed access to the drug if their problem with erectile dysfunction causes them “severe distress”, but a prescription would require a prior assessment at a specialist medical centre.

When asked if the new generic versions of tadalafil would be more easy to obtain, an NHS spokesperson said: “Anything that lowers the cost is welcome. We are currently consulting on extending the presumption that people should be able to buy their own over the counter medicines, direct, where appropriate.”

The Cialis (tadalafil) patent is owned by the global pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The expiry of the patent has opened the door to other manufacturers and the first stock of generic tadalafil will be produced by Accord Helathcare and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
